Introducing: The brand new edit mode in Swipe

We’ve worked incredibly hard over the last months to build the best slide editing experience possible in Swipe. Everything is brand new, but it shouldn’t feel too different, just a whole lot better.

editor

We designed the new edit mode with your content in mind. Just like our dashboard redesign, we put a lot of effort into making sure that our interface is as unobtrusive as possible. Gone is the permanent sidebar and all you’ll see on the screen are your slides. We no longer crop your slides and you’ll see them exactly as you designed them. The new edit mode is made to give you the tools to work quicker, by yourself or with others. It isn’t just a redesign or a facelift, everything behind it is brand new too. This means that uploading is quicker, dragging and dropping works a lot better, adding content and creating slides a lot easier, and collaborating live with others is a lot smoother.

The add field: a new way to add slides

What was once in the sidebar on the left of the screen has now moved to the top right of the editor in a new field called the “add field.” We wanted more flexibility for the future as we add types of slides to Swipe and felt cluttered with a growing sidebar that took so much space. The new add field is only for adding and creating slides. It’s built to be quite intelligent too by noticing the intent you have based on what you start typing or what you paste inside of it.

Pro Tips:

  • Hit + on your keyboard to bring in the new add field
  • Start typing text in it and it will automatically recommend Markdown
  • Paste a YouTube or Vimeo link and it will recognize which one it is for you and give you a preview automatically
  • Clicking “upload images, pdf” lets you use the file picker from your desktop computer if you don’t want to drag and drop

Multi select mode: manage many slides at once

Having the ability to edit multiple slides and drag and drop them from a part of the deck to another has been one of the most requested features in Swipe. You can now do it and it should feel like you’re using a native app, not a browser. You’ll notice that you’re in the multi select mode when you see the top toolbar turn blue.

You can click and drag on the screen to get a selection zone and then add to it by clicking the slide checkboxes (this works on mobile too). You can also click or tap and hold on a slide and it will bring up the multi-select mode. Once you’ve selected multiple slides, you can drag them as a group and move them anywhere in the deck or delete them.

Pro Tips:

  • Hit cmd+a (ctrl+a) to select all slides
  • You can use the “delete” and “enter” keys to delete and confirm delete on slides
  • Drag mouse to select multiple slides
  • Tap and drag to select on mobile
  • Click and hold to get into multi select mode on a computer or tap and hold to get into multi select mode on mobile
  • Hold shift and click to select a range of slides

Better Drag & Drop to upload

Dragging and dropping into the editor is now better than ever. You can drag and drop in place, where you’ll see a blue line appear. You can also drag a file anywhere onto the screen and you’ll see a blue border appear on the edge of the upload area. Drop your files there and your slides will upload at the end of the deck.

A less intrusive way to manage your deck

If you click the title of your deck in edit mode you’ll see the new “sidebar” appear over your content. It should look familiar as we brought the control toggles from the dashboard into the editor. You’ll also notice that embed codes for decks are now available from the sidebar itself (along with some new pro features that are launching soon). As we add more useful tools to manage your deck, you’ll see them appear in here. Share your deck privately, invite people to collaborate, edit the title, or add some of the powerful pro features from here - all of your deck management tools in one place.

Upload management

The new editor is also a transformation into a more united application. If you went back to the dashboard previously, all ongoing uploads would cancel. You can now navigate around the app and follow the progress of your uploads with the new upload manager. You can also see if files fail to upload and you have the ability to retry the upload. You can also cancel uploads quickly if you dropped the wrong file.

Better Previews

To preview any slide, click the thumbnail in the dashboard or in edit mode. You’ll notice the top toolbar change to black, which means you’re in preview mode. You can edit Polls and Markdown slides right from the preview itself either by clicking the slide or hitting the edit button. Previews now go full screen and all of the controls, like edit and delete, are on the top toolbar to the right.

Pro Tips:

  • Click on a Markdown slide preview to go into edit mode
  • Click on a Poll slide preview to go into edit mode
  • Use the left and right keyboard arrows to navigate between slides

A new Markdown slides editor

We’ve learned a lot about building great text editors in the past year and your feedback on the old editor really helped shape the new Markdown editor. It’s a lot quicker than before, a lot simpler, it feels more natural, and it’s designed to let you build beautiful decks in minutes. See previews of your slides on the side, use a handy syntax helper to avoid ever having to learn Markdown, and customize your slides in seconds with our beautiful themes - now just one click away.

We wrote an extensive overview of the new Markdown editor, read it here.

Pro Tips:

  • Undo: cmd+z
  • Bold: cmd+b
  • Italics: cmd+i

Updated Polls

You’ve built thousands of Polls in Swipe to use for your market research, pitches, or lessons. One of the most requested features was to add the ability to edit a poll once you created it and now you can. Click a poll thumbnail and it will open the full screen preview. Click edit in the top-right of the toolbar or click on the poll itself to go into edit mode. We also made results load faster and creating Polls is now a full-screen, beautiful experience. Read a more in-depth description of what’s new in Polls in this blog post.

Thank you for your feedback!

We just wanted to thank you for the hundreds of supportive emails and incredible suggestions that you sent us over the last months. We built the new Swipe with all of that in mind and we’re excited to hear what you think. As we continue to improve, your feedback is incredibly valuable.
